The word 'Astrology' was derived from a Greek word meaning 'word of stars'. Astrology and Astronomy both share a common origin. However, astronomy is the scientific study of celestial objects and phenomena, whereas astrology relates those phenomena with earthly affairs.

Most astrological traditions are based on the relative positions and movements of various celestial bodies and on the construction of celestial patterns as seen at the time and place of the event being studied.

There are three main traditions used by astrologers namely: Indian astrology, Western astrology and Chinese astrology.

Indian and Western astrology are similar in content. Both focus on the casting of astrological chart that is popularly known as 'horoscope'. However, there are differences between the Indian and Western traditions.

The main difference is that while the Indian tradition uses a method called sidereal zodiac that links the signs of the zodiac to their original constellations, the Western tradition uses tropical zodiac method. As a result, now, after several centuries, the zodiacal signs in the Western tradition do not correspond to the same part of the sky as their original constellation. In Indian tradition the link still remains of importance.

The time and space (as seen from the earth) are divided into 12 equal divisions or segments called the Zodiac. In astrology each of the 12 segments are known as a zodiac sign.

The horoscope or astrological chart is also divided into 12 divisions called 'houses' representing a zodiac sign. Each house controls different aspects of life. The astrologer studies the placement of planets in relation to the zodiac at the time of birth of a person and prepares the birth chart or 'horoscope'. The astrologer then calculates the movements of the planets along the zodiac over the time and figures out favorable or unfavorable periods. An astrologer can also suggest to a person what fields of activity would be beneficial to him or her.

People seek astrologers to understand the ups and downs in their life due to the influence of planets. They perform religious ceremonies to avoid or mitigate the pain according to recommendations by the astrologer.

Astrology remains a principal source of reference for the majority of people in India. Astrologers often predict the future by Vedic astrology methodology. They advise the client to practice meditation with chanting of mantras or direct them to special shrines on pilgrimage. They also prescribe special stones to be worn by the seeker to keep away evils or to bring fortune.

Astrology is commonly used to help in taking important decisions. Naming of a new-born, decisions about marriage, opening a new business, moving into a new home are all done after consultation with an astrologer.
